I think my habits fluctuate, a little bit more than yours too, but my situation is quite different. This does sound like it works very well for you though. My late wife found movement exercise exercises, very helpful with her osteoarthritis in the mornings when she could do it. As for me now, though, it seems well you have probably just recently risen, I have just finally selected a movie to watch before I go to bed for the day and probably get up around 6 PM. I like that you make hydrating a habit. It’s so easy to forget that!
Ah! It can be so helpful (when possible) to find movement when dealing with health issues. Lol. We do have quite opposite schedules. I could not deal with your night shifts. I have always been a morning person. Have you always been more of a night owl? Or is that just by default with your job?
I’ve always really been a night person. I did a lot of that early reading of mine by staying up way past what should’ve been my bedtime in middle school years. I just made sure that I was listening and could hear if mama or grandma was coming, so I could shut off the lights, so they wouldn’t see them from under the door and no I was still up at 3 AM. For me it was always the quiet time, after everyone else had gone to sleep.
Even in university, even if I had classes first thing in the morning, which I was often late for, I would fine that I did my best work, especially writing essays, after midnight.
Then it fluctuated back-and-forth for a while, depending on my situation. Obviously during the lawyer era, I had to be up in the mornings for court.
And when my wife was alive, I adopted sort of a more normal schedule, getting up around 9 AM, and going to bed around 1 a.m. But even then, by the time I got up, she had usually been been awake for three hours already, usually working on your fibre art. And she would usually go to bed a couple of hours before me.
But then my night habits just came into full bloom here with the security job, and even not working it, I keep the same hours.
I'm not a morning person but I'd like to be. My routine is tea, journal and a daily meditation email....which leads to other emails which leads to too much screen too early in the day! I'm going to try hydrating and walking. Thanks for the tips!
Sounds like you have a great foundation to start with. I find starting with some moment and hydration can make a bit impact on my overall day. Wishing you the best week of walking and water ahead!
A helpful article. I just read that drinking a glass of water when you rise is beneficial so I’ve incorporated that into my coffee routine. I simply drink the water as I’m preparing the coffee. So I love your suggestion of pairing a new task with what you were already doing so that it doesn’t really feel like you’re adding.
You’ve got it! Stacking that habit of drinking water while waiting will help you keep it going. It’s funny how that little pause of waiting for the coffee to brew can be put to such good use, if we care just intentional about it.
Melissa, I love this and my mornings. As the coffee brewed, mine started with watching two rabbits nibbling grass and clover in the sun from my kitchen window as the groundhog peered out from beneath the shed. I smiled looking forward to finishing Watership Down today, a favorite from my youth. Then, breakfast and off for a walk before settling at the desk to work. Mornings are a gift.
Thank you so much for letting me into your morning. I was watching a group of ducks have a full on discussion this morning out my window, while I drank my coffee. I hope you had a wonderful walk to day under the with the best weather shining down on you. ☀️🌻
